Economic security
This field of counter-espionage is intended to protect German businesses against state-controlled spying activities, the ensuing competitive disadvantages, sabotage and attacks by political extremists.
German business and industry invest large sums in research and development as the foundation for innovation and expertise. Such investment provides a decisive competitive advantage. As a global market leader, Germany arouses envy among competitors and foreign governments.
Foreign intelligence services have repeatedly tried to procure the latest technologies and research results so as to save their domestic industry the cost of conducting its own research and development.
Besides the use of classic means and methods of espionage, the increasing electronic networking involves new and considerably higher risks.
In principle, German business and industry are responsible for protecting themselves and their intellectual property. However, German companies are exposed to various risks. They must protect themselves against covert espionage operations and prevent possible acts of sabotage. Some enterprises are also exposed to attacks by political extremists because they provide services to the intelligence agencies, for example, and are consequently targeted as "those involved in apparatuses of state repression".
In co-operation with the intelligence services of the federal states, the BfV is a service provider for counter-espionage and for broad protection against industrial espionage.
In line with the principle of prevention through information, the BfV seeks to raise awareness among businesses, research institutions and associations, thereby helping establish an adequate security consciousness in trade and industry on a long-term basis.
"Protection against economic security is teamwork" – the BfV is partner of German business and industry, thus co-operating with various companies and associations.
In case of suspected industrial espionage, the BfV is a competent and trustworthy contact.
