What does BfV do?

In order to counter espionage and proliferation, BfV gathers and analyses information on intelligence activities posing a threat to national security. Such illegal activities undertaken by foreign intelligence services are a massive assault on Germany's security interests. A close co-operation with other German authorities is essential to BfV's analysis work, as is the trustful international co-operation with other intelligence services.

The first step is to assess the threat currently posed by espionage before identifying the main protagonists and the targets affiliated with them in a second step. BfV will sensitise contact persons and targets of foreign intelligence services in response to specific situations. The ultimate aim is to prevent or stop any espionage activity. BfV will also share its intelligence with the Federal Public Prosecutor, who may then initiate criminal proceedings.

In the field of counter-proliferation, BfV strives to raise awareness of the topic and the associated risks among the industry and among educational and research institutions. BfV is also responsible for uncovering any activities of proliferation concern in order to prevent any procurement efforts of foreign countries. To fulfil this task, BfV works in close co-operation with the domestic intelligence services of the federal states and with other agencies as far as export control is concerned.
