
President Thomas Haldenwang
Biography

Thomas Haldenwang was born in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, on 21 May 1960. Having passed his Abitur (German A-levels) and done his military service in the German Navy, he studied law in Marburg/Lahn. In 1991, he completed the obligatory legal traineeship in the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court district with the second state examination in law.
From 1991 to 2000, he worked in the Federal Ministry of the Interior as a legal adviser in the Directorate-General for matters relating to public service law and as a legal adviser for personnel-related matters. In 2000, he became head of group of sections in the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA – Federal Office of Administration), where he was responsible for specialist tasks of several federal ministries.
In 2006, he returned to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, where he became head of the section tasked with the law governing public service careers. In addition, he took over the management of the Federal Personnel Committee.
Mr Haldenwang has been working at the BfV since 2009. He was head of the Central Services Department until late 2012, when he was appointed Permanent Deputy to the Vice President. Since 15 November 2018, he has been the BfV's president.
