To ensure the citizens' trust in the protection of the constitution agencies' accomplishment of tasks, they are controlled at several levels:
- by the Minister of the Interior who has parliamentary responsibility
- by the parliaments of the Federation and the Federal States
- by the Federal Commissioner resp. the Federal State Commissioners for Data Protection.
These controls are supplemented by the possibility of citizens to have measures which they believe have impaired their freedom verified by a court. And something which is self-evident in a free society: critical control by the mass media press, radio and television.
All in all, it can be said that the protection of the constitution agencies are among the best-controlled institutions of our state. They cannot do whatever they want to do but only what they have been tasked to do and are allowed to do in our interest. The protection of the constitution agencies do not restrict the citizens' personal freedom, but they protect it. Therefore, the results of their work are publicised in the annual report on the protection of the constitution and in numerous publications of the protection of the constitution agencies of the Federation and the Federal States.
